Overview
Specialized arboreal care
Green tree pythons are one of the most beautiful and rewarding species in herpetoculture โ but they have specific requirements that make them poorly suited to beginners. The combination of vertical-oriented enclosures, precise temperature gradients, and humidity management is unforgiving of neglect.
That said, with the right setup, GTPs are remarkably stable animals. They thrive on consistency. A well-tuned enclosure rarely needs adjustment, and a properly cared-for GTP will live 15โ20+ years.
Enclosure Setup
Vertical & humid
๐
Enclosure Size
2ร2ร3 ft (vertical)
Adult GTPs benefit from height more than length. Vertical PVC enclosures are ideal.
๐ก๏ธ
Day Temp
82โ86ยฐF
Ambient temp at perch height. Avoid hot spots above 88ยฐF โ GTPs do not need basking heat.
๐
Night Temp
72โ76ยฐF
A meaningful night drop is essential. GTPs need this temperature cycle to thrive long-term.
๐ง
Humidity
60โ80%
Cycle daily โ higher at night (80%+) and lower during the day (60โ70%). Mimic rainforest conditions.
๐ณ
Perches
Multiple horizontal
Smooth horizontal branches at varied heights. Perch diameter should match the snake's mid-body girth.
๐ชด
Substrate
Cypress or coco coir
Holds humidity well. Many keepers go bioactive for GTPs โ replicating the rainforest floor.
Daily Cycles
Mimic the rainforest
The biggest difference between a struggling GTP and a thriving one is often the daily cycle of temperature and humidity. In the rainforest, nights are humid and cool; days are warm and slightly drier. Replicate this through automated misting on a timer, ambient room temperatures that drop overnight, and ventilation tuned to allow this swing without becoming chronically wet or dry.
Stress is the enemy
GTPs are sensitive to disturbance. Place enclosures in low-traffic areas. Avoid unnecessary handling, especially with newly acquired animals. Established GTPs in stable environments live remarkably long, healthy lives. Stressed GTPs deteriorate quickly. Patience is the difference.
