Overview
Hardy & adaptable
Carpet pythons are among the most forgiving python species when it comes to husbandry. They tolerate a range of conditions, take handling well once acclimated, and reward proper care with decades of life โ wild-type carpets routinely live 20โ30 years in captivity with good husbandry.
That said, "forgiving" is not "indestructible." Proper temperature gradients, secure caging, and species-appropriate enrichment are non-negotiable. The keepers who succeed long-term treat carpet care with the same rigor they'd apply to a more demanding species.
Enclosure Setup
Space & structure
๐
Enclosure Size
4ร2ร2 ft minimum (adult)
PVC or sealed wood cages preferred. Carpets benefit from horizontal space and vertical climbing room.
๐ก๏ธ
Hot Spot
88โ90ยฐF
Provided via overhead radiant heat panel or DHP, controlled by a quality thermostat.
โ๏ธ
Cool Side
75โ78ยฐF
Allows the snake to thermoregulate. Night drops to low 70s are acceptable and natural.
๐ง
Humidity
50โ60%
Higher (70%+) during shed cycles. Avoid chronic dampness โ well-ventilated humidity is the goal.
๐ฟ
Substrate
Cypress mulch or aspen
Holds humidity well and allows natural burrowing behavior. Avoid pine and cedar โ toxic to reptiles.
๐ก
Lighting
12-hour photoperiod
UVB is not required but provides health benefits. Low-output T5 with 5โ6% UVB is ideal if used.
Enrichment
Climbing & hiding
Carpets are semi-arboreal โ provide sturdy branches, shelves, or platforms at multiple heights. They will use them. Multiple hides on both the warm and cool sides give the snake security to thermoregulate without stress. A large water bowl big enough to soak in is essential, particularly before sheds.
Quality of life over minimums
Minimum enclosure dimensions are exactly that โ minimums. Wherever possible, exceed them. A carpet python in a 6ร2ร2 enclosure with proper enrichment lives a fundamentally different life than one in the bare minimum 4ร2ร2. The animals know the difference, and so do experienced keepers.
